| | | | Physically Active Kids Get Better Grades (Full Version – 16 pages) (6.8 MB) This research summarizes the dramatic connection between academic performance of elementary school children and regular, vigorous physical activity in schools.
With budget cuts and time constraints due to the requirements of "No Child Left Behind (NCLB)," less than 8% of elementary schools have regular P.E. Yet, the data from the dozens of studies collected in this report show that academic performance is hurt, not helped, by less school-based physical activity.
Students get higher math and reading scores, this study shows, plus they concentrate better, have improved classroom behavior, and fewer disciplinary problems when they have vigorous exercise at school.
Regular physical activity is the best anti-dote to the childhood obesity epidemic and the onset of Early Chronic Diseases (ECD). It is also a sure way to improve academic performance. Healthy children – healthy schools; a true win-win. |

(Quotes by Julie Christofferson, Curriculum Specialist, Jordan School District).
This District made Early Sport Physical Activity Program their P.E. program throughout all elelmentary schools (Quotes by Boyd Jentzsch, President & CEO, Early Sport Foundation).
The article gives an overview of the Early Sport curriculum and how well it works for the students and teachers of the district. |

| | | | Article: Unhealthy Choices: Young and Unfit (P.E. Left Behind as Academics Stressed) (Web Link) This article explores the reasons why this nation's young generation can easily boast with excess weight and Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.
Though health experts, including the American Academy of Pediatrics, say fitness and nutrition are as crucial to a child's well-being and future as reading, writing and arithmetic, our children have been left out of both regular P.E. and nutrition education.
Early Sport Foundation has created and tested its Physical Activity Program among 3rd-6th graders. It was the first time ever that a P.E. program was tested and its results were accumulated in the report.

| | | | Ground Breaking Research: Short Bouts of Jumping Exercise Improves Bone Mass in Children (Web Link) Ground breaking research at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC, Canada), proves that jumping daily for short periods dramatically improves bone formation in elementary students.
Children need regular, bone-stressing exercise to build strong bones. Once 18-20 years old, new bone usually ceases to form, and bones begin to thin thereafter. This accelerates with women after menopause.
However, with children getting too-little exercise today, rickets (soft bones) is making a comeback, and an entire generation of young women are projected to risk development of osteoporosis at ages well before menopause.
The GoZonkers Radio programs include at least 1.5 minutes of vigorous jumping exercises daily. If Teachers use each Episode twice a day, as most do, it duplicates the bone forming routines shown in this study. |

| | | | Early Sport P.E. Effectiveness Protocol Report – 30 Minutes a Day Can Reduce Risks for Type 2 Diabetes and Early Chronic Diseases (ECD) (80 KB, 16 pages) Before offering its P.E. program to the elementary school teachers, Early Sport Foundation conducted a P.E. effectiveness protocol test at Silver Mesa Elementary, Jordan School District, UT. The purposes of this protocol test were:
(1) Developing and testing a standardized method of evaluation the effectiveness of P.E. programs based upon the use of medically recognized bio-markers for the detection of Early Chronic Diseases (ECD).
(2) Determining whether a P.E. program designed to maintain elevated heart rates (50% or more of a class period) can effect positive changes in recongized bio-markers for detection of ECD.
(3) Measuring the effectiveness of the Early Sport program as a first test of this protocol. |
